He is perhaps one of the most darkened forces in hardcore history. Due to problems in his youth, this hardcore-icon found his relief in sadomasochism. He went to some of the darkest shipping wharfs of Amsterdam, where he lived locked in saloons, dungeons and rusty chambers. The industrial sounds he heard at that dark time of his life, led to a very big hunger that was about to be satisfied in the late nineties. One of the biggest mysteries of our scene has not been revealed ever since.
The man, who has been credited as S. Olifant ( a pseudonym, as the true identity of The Masochist must be kept secret) released his first record at the end of 1997. The "Masochizm E.P." wasn’t an instant success, but was a true blueprint for later glory times. The sound featured on the E.P. can be described best like a buzzing bee who’s about to sting. The Masochist got major credits for his second release: "The 2nd Strike". This E.P. turned out to be a classic, due to the presence of two outstanding partycrashers: "No Newstyle?" and the original version of "Killing Scum". Based on the sound of the first E.P., these two tracks rocked every dancefloor. Especially "Killing Scum" was a very special track, inspired by the wellknown opera Prince Igor by Russian composer Alexander Borodin. Every hardcore-head has sung along with the majestic melody. The success got even bigger with the third and fourth release. Especially the fourth got everyone’s attention, due to Buzz Fuzz wicked remix of "No Newstyle" and of course DJ Promo’s unrivalled "Killing Scum" reinterpretation. This E.P. is still one of the most wanted records in the hardcore scene.
The Masochist became very popular in a short time, and decided to play his unique sound for frenzied crowds all over the world. He rocked big party’s like Mystery Land, Thunderdome On Tour and collaborated with Neophyte for the "The Tunnel E.P." on Rotterdam Records before he made a move to the Masters of Hardcore imprint. This switch was another step in his ongoing streak of successes: the studio sessions with Bass-D & King Matthew resulted in the massive "Get Retarded" 12" and the follow-up "The 8th Domain" is a huge hit-record up to this very day - the Neophyte remix of "Antimix" still smashes every dancefloor. The album "Kick Azz" proved that The Masochist is one of a kind and one of the strongest acts during the difficult days in hardcore.
The Masochist’s performances were noticed by thousands of hardcore-addicts and he got booked for major events like Masters of Hardcore, In Qontrol, Defqon.1, Dominator, Hellraiser, Project: Hardcore, Hardcore4Life and many other big party’s. The Masochist had claimed his place in the scene, as a producer but also as an appreciated DJ. But don’t try to discover his true identity: you will be tortured, not only physically, but most of all your eardrums will be blasted with the intensity of a clusterbomb.
